From Switzerland With Love: USA Wins Gold
"James Bond" combo routine, Kozlova/Bartosik duet sweep on Sunday

Anna Kozlova and Alison Bartosik remained undefeated in 2002 after swimming away with duet gold at the 27th annual Swiss Open in Geneva, Switzerland on Sunday.

The United States' top duet scored a final free routine mark of 97.167 to top Canada's Team II duet of Chelsea Luker and Jessica Dubuc at 95.000. Swiss National Team members Magdelena Brunner and Belinda Schmid finished third at 94.000.

In the composite standings, Kozlova & Bartosik finished 2.5 points ahead of the field at 96.333, followed by Luker & Dubuc at 93.833 and Brunner & Schmid at 93.617. Team USA's No. 2 duet of Mary Hofer and Andrea Nott, who have trained together for just one month, finished sixth with a composite mark of 92.167.

Kozlova & Bartosik began competing together in March, when they captured German Open gold, followed by the U.S. National Championship in April. The duo has one more major event of the summer when they return to Switzerland to take on the top 24 duets in the world at the IX FINA World Cup, Sept. 12-15 in Zurich.

Team USA left the competition shaken, not stirred, in the free routine combination event, swimming a whimsical "James Bond" routine for a final score of 97.500. Canada finished second at 96.000 with Japan third at 95.667.

Swimming for Team USA were Victoria Bowen (Plano, Texas), Anna Eng (West Chester, Pa.), Mary Hofer (San Diego), Suzanna Hyatt (Indianapolis), Bill May (Cicero, N.Y.), Lindsay Newbill (Laguna Hills, Calif.), Andrea Nott (San Jose, Calif.), Kim Probst (Troy, N.Y.), Shella Sadovnik (Irvine, Calif.), Emiko Takyu (San Jose, Calif.) and Beth Kreimer (Cincinnati, Ohio).

In the solo final contested Saturday, Bill May came away with a composite mark of 97.250 for the gold, with USA's Victoria Bowen fifth at 92.334. Team USA finished third in the team event with a composite mark of 93.916.

The Swiss Open marks the end of the competitive season for U.S. National Team II. The U.S. Junior National Team will compete Aug. 15-19 at the Junior World Championships, while Team I is headed for the FINA World Cup in September.
