Solo Competition Highlights Day One

Clermont, Fla. - The nation's most elite Masters synchronized swimmers concluded day one of competition at the 2005 U.S. Masters Championships. The meet kicked off with the solo competition but will conclude a day early (Oct. 22) due to the threat of Hurricane Wilma. A revised championship schedule has been issued for Friday and Saturday.

Katie Haidar of the Cypress Swim Club finished the day with the meet's overall highest score of 80.884. She claimed the first place position in the 30-39 Grandmasters division. Not too far behind, was Unsyncable team member Karen Rosolowski (79.217) who grabbed a first place in the 40-49 Grandmasters age group. Other top finishers included Sarah Beth Moorman (78.450 ) of MAC Synchro who took home first place in the Grandmasters 20-29 age group and Carol Mellows (78.100) of the Redwood Empire who claimed a top finish in the 50-59 Grandmasters division.

Taking home the solo gold medal in the 80-89 year old age group was Barbara Browne, also of the Redwood Empire with an overall score of 59.034. Browne represented one of three swimmer who competed in the 80-89 age group.

The ongoing meet features over 200 of the nation's top Masters synchronized swimmers, ranging from 20-85+ years old, who are competing for overall team and individual titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events. The Masters championship began in 1975, making the 2005 event the 31st annual competition.

The championships will continue on Friday with the duet events as well as the technical trio competition. Saturday will feature the free trio event, team competition and the combo routines.
