Stanford Makes a Splash at Collegiate Championships
Host Stanford Sits on Top After Day One of Preliminary Competition
Palo Alto, Calif. – The 30th annual U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships kicked off today at Stanford University. More than 200 of the top athletes from the collegiate scene made their way to Avery Aquatic Center to vie for titles in the solo, duet, trio, and team events. The championships are an open-class meet, combining competition from NCAA Divisions I, II and III and NAIA colleges and universities.
Day one provided preliminary competition in the solo and duet events. The top 12 finishers will advance to finals (Saturday). Friday will be highlighted by preliminary team competition.
Stanford sophomore and 2004 Olympian Sara Lowe swept the preliminary competition after finishing first in the solo event (92.833). Lowe teamed up with 2004 Olympian (representing Canada) Courtenay Stewart for a top finish in the duet (94.333). Current National Team I Member Becky Kim (Ohio State) finished the solo preliminary competition in second place (92.000) while teammates Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker (92.333) took second in the duet prelims.
Competition will continue through Saturday, March 25. An all-session pass for adults will be $20. Students, youth and senior citizen all-session passes will be $12.
