Jasontek One Step Closer To Athens
Field trimmed to 13 for U.S. Olympic Team berth

Becky Jasontek leads the list of 13 synchronized swimmers named to the 2003 World Championships & Olympic Games Training Squad, announced Monday after three days of intense evaluation at the Weyerhaeuser-King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Jasontek, 27, of Loveland, Ohio, earned a composite score of 93.528 across four swims with Riverside's Stephanie Nesbitt second in qualifying at 93.506.

The 18-year veteran of the sport faced the reality of a career-ending injury in September of 1999 following a ruptured ovarian cyst that nearly cost her life, and did cost her a spot on the 2000 Olympic Team. However, Jasontek has fought back to the top of the sport since the setback and hopes to guide the United States to the podium in Athens.

Alison Bartosik and Anna Kozlova automatically qualified for the team by winning the 2003 U.S. Olympic Duet Trials on Saturday. Kozlova and Bartosik took fourth in the 2002 FINA World Cup, while the USA earned bronze in the team event marking the team's first medal since 1998.

The 2003 U.S. Senior National Team will represent the United States against the world's best at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona. The team will also compete at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo and the 2004 Olympic Qualifying Open in Athens.

The squad of 13 will regroup in March at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for further evaluation. In May, the squad will be cut to a delegation size of 10 for the World Championships, and further pared to nine in May of 2004 for the Olympic Games.

The Trials process began at the 2002 U.S. Nationals, and progresses over four phases throughout the year. The athletes are tested in eight technical elements, then evaluated by 13 judges during each of four pre-set routine swims. All scores throughout the trials process are confidential until the teams are announced.

Also named Monday were the 11 members of the 2003 U.S. National Team II, which will compete at the 2003 Swiss Open, July 3-6 in Basel, Switzerland. Additionally, the 21 juniors vying for a spot on the 2003 U.S. Junior National Team were trimmed to 15, with the final cut to 10 slated for the 2003 Speedo Junior Championships, April 3-5 in Ft. Collins, Colo.
