Abel Wins Solo Final for U.S.
United States takes silver in team-- China wins

San Diego, Calif.-- United States Junior National Team member, Brooke Abel, won the gold medal in the final solo competition, beating Japan by more than one-tenth of a point. China took bronze in the solo final during the second day of competition at the Poway Community Swim Center in San Diego, Calif.

In addition to west coast clubs, Riverside, Walnut Creek, and Santa Clara, the Pirouettes of Texas earned ninth place in their first final competition of the 2005 U.S. Open.

Brooke Abel and duet partner Carolyn Watts took silver to the China's gold in the final duet competition, leaving Japan in third and fourth place. The New Canaan Y Aquianas' championship Age Group duet, Jamie DeLancy and Corrine Smith, placed eighth after the Riverside Aquettes, and before the Juneau Aurora Knights.

The Walnut Creek Aquanuts took gold in the trio finals while the Riverside Aquettes won silver and bronze. Age Group champions, Indy Synchro, maintained their seventh place preliminary finish.

China ran away with first in the team competition, while the Unites States battled their way to silver-- improving upon their third place team prelim finish. Japan took bronze. Trio champions, The Walnut Creek Aquanuts, took fourth place. The Cincinnati Synchrogators moved from eighth place in prelims to a sixth place final team finish.

Competition continues Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the Senior athletes.

Ticket prices Saturday, July 16, are $10 at the door.
