U.S National Team II To Compete at U.S. Open in New Orleans
Four International Teams expected to compete as well

U.S. National Team II will compete in this year’s U.S. Open Synchronized Swimming Championships to be held July 20-24 at the University of New Orleans Aquatic Center in New Orleans, La. Swimmers from four international teams are expected to compete as well: Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

This elite caliber, international competition attracts more than 300 of the nation’s top synchronized swimmers as well as top international contenders. Each will vie for titles in solo, duet, trio and team events in the Junior and Senior divisions. The title of the fan-favorite combination routine will be up for grabs as well, which incorporates five different routines into one seven-minute program.

“As both coach and father of a synchronized swimmer, I am elated to have the U.S. Open in New Orleans so that we can showcase this sport to the populace of a part of the country which has not previously had the opportunity to see this level of competition in person,” said J. Rene Williams, local meet manager. “The individuals to whom I have spoken from the local area are very much looking forward to this event, as it represents a distinct departure from the norm of aquatic sport competition. I anticipate that those who do attend will be impressed by the grace and athleticism of the athletes, and I hope it will provide encouragement to girls who might be interested in participating in the sport.”

The event lasts five days and carries with it an estimated economic impact of more than $750,000. Past event hosts include Federal Way, Wash. in ’03, Detroit, Mich. in ’02, Hilo, Hawaii in ’01, and New Haven, Conn. in ’00.

Competition begins early mornings (schedule enclosed). The University of New Orleans Aquatic Center is located at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.
