Close Finishes in Senior Finals
U.S. Team Wins Team Combo


FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The United Airlines Open wrapped up Saturday with the Team Combo Final and Senior Finals in the solo, duet, trio and team events.

The day began with the United States capturing the gold in the Team Combo Routine edging the Canada Federation scoring a 97.667 to their 97.000. The Walnut Creek Aquanuts (Calif.) placed third with an 88.333. The team combo routine was added to the meet last year and incorporates three to six different routines into a five-minute program.

Senior Finals followed in the afternoon beginning with the trio competition. Only three entries made up the Senior trio division and the standings remained the same throughout the competition. Joo Hee Joa, Rachel Sinn and Missy Knight of the Walnut Creek Aquanuts (Calif.) took first after posting a composite score of 84.667. Celia Gonzalez, Rebekah Friedman and Julie Luca of Dade Co. (Fla.) finished second with an 80.000, while the Tallahassee Serinas' (Fla.) Catherine Carella, Alexis Legate and Claire Oliver placed third scoring a 78.000.

Wen-Wen Jiang and Ting-Ting Jiang of the Peoples Republic of China took top honors in the duet final posting a 92.501. Teammates Ou Liu and Xi Luo finished second with a 91.084 followed by the United States' duos of Janet and Jennie Culp (Littleton, Colo.) and Kate Hooven (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Becky Kim (Walnut Creek, Calif.), both at 90.834.

The solo finals came down to the wire as Qiu-Ting Sun of the Peoples Republic of China edged out the United States' Kim Probst (Troy, NY) by 0.416 and teammate Xin Shi by 0.750 for gold. Sun scored a 91.667, while Probst posted a 91.251 followed by Shi at 90.917.

The evening closed with the Senior team final. In a close race, the Peoples Republic of China held on to top the United States scoring a final composite 94.250. The United States finished at 93.417. The Santa Clara Aquamaids (Calif.) took the bronze with an 89.417.
