Duets, Trios Take Stage Saturday
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The 2003 Masters Synchronized Swimming Championships continued Friday with the individual technical solo and figure competition.
For the second day in a row, MAC Synchro Masters' (Ore.) Erin Olson , competing in the 20-29 Grandmasters division, earned the meet's highest individual technical solo score of 86.000 and collected her second gold of the event.
Becky Meitin of the Rocky Mountain Splash (Colo.) earned her second gold as well, winning the 50-59 division after scoring a 69.834. Carol Mellows of Redwood Empire (Calif.), a nationally rated judge, defended her title by winning gold in 50-59 Grandmaster with an 80.333.
Closer to home, Dayton Synchronettes (Ohio) swimmer Sarah Aguirre posted a 76.834 to capture the 20-29 division. Aquirre won the solo event yesterday.
Other technical solo winners include: Kira Wright , MAC Synchro Masters (Ore.) in the 30-39 age group; Melissa Kalaf , Unsynchables (Calif.) in 30-39 Grandmasters; Robin Kramer , Cypress Swim Club (Calif.) in the 40-49 division; Ruth Thompson , Michigan Synchro Masters in 40-49 Grand Masters; Holly Kyle , Redwood Empire (Calif.) in the 60-69 age group; Penny DeMeules , Unsynchables (Calif.) in 60-69 Grand Masters; Donn Squire , Cypress Swim Club (Calif.) in the 70-79 division; Nan Zack , AquaSprite Masters (Ill.) in 70-79 Grand Masters; and Barbara Brown , Redwood Empire (Calif.) in the 80-89 age group.
There are two divisions within each age group, Regular and Grandmaster. A Grandmaster denotes competitors who are previous national team members, national champions, or national finalists in collegiate, junior or senior national events.
Competition continues with the duet competition beginning at 7:50 a.m. followed by trios. The team event will take place on Sunday morning. Competition begins at 8:30 a.m.
