2004 Olympic Team - Synchronized Swimming to Perform Exhibition

The world’s largest synchronized swimming event with nearly 1,100 athletes from more than 70 clubs will invade the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. June 26 - July 3 for the 2004 Esynchro Age Group Championships.

On hand for the national grassroots competition will be up-and-coming junior athletes representing the nation’s top-rated clubs, along with several reigning age group national champions. Swimmers will be competing for titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events in four different age groups: 12-13, 14-15, 16-17 and 18-19.

Also participating in part of the event will be the 2004 Olympic Team – Synchronized Swimming. The team will exhibit its technical and free routines along with the duet free program after the 14-15 final competition on June 30. Bill May, the sport’s lone elite male athlete, will also perform an exhibition.

The Championship lasts eight days and carries with it an estimated economic impact of more than $1.3 million. Past event hosts include Gainesville, Fla. in 2003, Seattle, Wash. in 2002, Syracuse, N.Y. in 2001, and Oakland, Calif. in 2000. This year’s event is hosted by Indy Synchro.

“ Indy Synchro is thrilled to host the 2004 Esynchro Age Group Championships, and we think that the IU Natatorium, host to so many other prestigious water events, is a terrific venue for the world's largest synchronized swimming competition,” said local meet manager Laurie Hartman. “ Many community leaders have partnered with Indy Synchro to make this event successful.  Dozens of community members are willing to donate their time to volunteer at this event.  The response of the Indianapolis community is making it possible to give the athletes, coaches and officials a truly warm Indiana welcome.”

Indiana clubs participating include Indy Synchro and Shooting Stars Synchro. Indy Synchro placed various routines in finals at the 2003 Championships including an 18-19 trio champion.

Competition begins early to mid-morning on most days. The Indiana University Natatorium is located on the campus of IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis).
