Walnut Creek Continues 12-13 Lead
12-13 Finals on tap for Monday at Esynchro Age Groups
The Walnut Creek Aquanuts continue to dominate the 12-13 prelims at the 2003 Esynchro Age Group Synchronized Swimming Championships in Gainesville, Fla.
The Aquanuts grabbed the top qualifying spots in the solo and team prelims Sunday. They tied for first in team with Riverside while Santa Clara sits close behind. The three California teams claimed the top three spots in all prelim events.
Seyeon Min of Walnut Creek took top honors in the solo prelims scoring a 74.500. Min also leads the pack in the trio competition with teammates Maria Koroleva and Yacaira O'Connor. The Aquanuts Olivia Morgan and Riverside's Jeanine McCullough are tied for second at 73.250, while Riverside's Danielle DeCarlo sits in fourth at 71.750.
In the 12-13 team competition, Walnut Creek continues to shine but shares the lead with Riverside. Both posted a 74.500. Santa Clara sits two points back in third at 72.500. Walnut Creek's 12-13 team was made up of Renae DiBartolomeo, Koroleva, Min, Morgan, O'Connor, Kellie Stump, and Sharon Wong. Swimming for Riverside was Ashley Bennett, Amanda Cook, DeCarlo, McCullough, Brittney Miller, Marissa Reynolds, Devon Thrasher, and Rebecca Vosler.
In the 14-15 team prelim, Walnut Creek took top honors scoring an 82.667. Santa Clara and Buffalo hold down second and third place at 81.333 and 77.000 respectively.
Swimming for Walnut Creek's 14-15 squad were Deborah Shim, Gabriela VanGemeren, Tracy Wong, Vanessa Calle, Diana LaScala-Gruenewald, Iris Hemmerich, Ainslee Smith ,and Caitlin Ellis.
Preliminary scores are weighted to 50 percent and combined with 50 percent of the athlete(s)'s figures score to determine the eight finalists in each event. In the final, the 50 percent free routine prelim score is replaced with 50 of the final routine score.
Nearly 1,000 athletes are competing for titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events in four different age groups: 12-13, 14-15, 16-17 and 18-19. Competition continues Monday with 14-15 trio prelims at 11:30 a.m. followed by 12-13 finals in all events at 3:30 p.m.
